Words from Shannae...

0 Women have something to say Links to this post

Hey Ladies,

I know its been a while since I've popped up on here, but I am going to do my best to integrate regular posts into my new routine :)

Maybe its the Pisces/Dreamer in me, but the thing I've missed the most about blogging was reflecting on quotes and words of inspiration...

So herein, is my first quote in what seems to be a bajillion years!

"Change is inevitable and everyone is replaceable -- even you"

I don't want to come across as a cynic, but I just feel that it is always important to have a strategy in place should things not go as "planned". Whether it be the woman who gets blindsided by the husband who leaves her, the celebrity that goes from the A list to the Z list or the girl who ends up getting caught up in lay-offs during a recession.

In times like this, always remember;

1. You're the sh$!#t - no really, you are - believe in yourself and know that regardless of the cards you are dealt, you can and will overcome your situation. In that same breath, don't think that you are so good that you are "untouchable". Anything can happen, but remain confident that you can handle whatever comes your way.

2. Save your money - I know you've all heard this before, but SERIOUSLY its important to put money away every month. Enough so that you have at least three months income saved in the event of a crisis. I lived crazy and spent like a wild animal for most of my twenties and then finally it hit me; I'M ALMOST 30! That realization felt like a tonne of bricks in the face so without further due I started saving.  The good news is - I made it a priority, was consistent with it and in less than a year - i've put away three months income and have even started investing! (What does that mean? You can do it too! Its really not that hard - just focus focus focus).

3. Don't believe what people say, believe what they do - Yes, change is inevitable and everyone is replaceable, but sometimes you can get a pretty good idea of  your fate and plan accordingly if you are good at reading tell-tale signs and strategizing.

Those are my two cents!

Meet me in the comments if you want to chat more :)

What I love about it, is that it has pushed my limits personally and professionally and I now have a better and more interesting approach to how I view situations. Try it! Make an effort to actually do one thing a day that scares you - You will grow to new heights and feel great in the process.

Nova Browning Rutherford - Woman with a Story

0 Women have something to say Links to this post

Pauleanna says: When I met Nova several months ago, we clicked right away and I admire her because she is a woman of enormous strength and beauty. Nova is a writer, public speaker and youth mentor and what I love about her the most is that she is so in touch with who she is. Everytime we chat I learn something new and she has opened my eyes to view things in a different light. She is incredibly down to earth and insightful which is why I am so excited to share her story with you - Enoy!

20s/30s/40s?
31. Not everyone makes it to this age, so I’ve learned to claim it.

What is your zodiac sign?
Spicy Pisces. 2-27.

What is your educational background?
Masters Degree in Street Smarts, Doctorate in Extracting The Message From The Mess. I studied Creative Advertising in college and I’ve completed writing courses at UCLA. 10 years in Marketing and Promotions must count for something.

Where were you born? Raised? Live now?
Chatham, ON is where I was born, Edmonton, AB and London, ON are where I was raised, Toronto, ON is where I ‘grew up’, Los Angeles, California is where I live now.

Single or Taken?
Married. So old fashioned. Ha!

First job ever?
Working in my grandfathers restaurant at age 9. I scooped ice cream, set the tables at weddings and did A LOT of dishes. I was paid in blank cassettes so I could make mix tapes from ‘Detroit’s Strong Songs’ FM98 WJLB. At 13 I was a corn detassler on a farm. Horrid. Started at 5am, walked the muddy fields in the hot sun (2 km long) and pulled off the 7ft corn stalks. A day labourer at 13.

First “real” job?
-The promotions department at Flow 93.5. I was one of the original staff when the station went live so part of my job was to drive the FLOW Truck, cover live-to-airs, hand out promo items and get the word out about this new station from Ajax to Albion Road. Going out Thursday through Sunday was a part of the gig. Good times. I met lifelong friends at that job and was able to work in radio – a medium I’d loved all my life.

Your 5 “must haves” of the moment?
HAIR MUST HAVE: Moroccan Oil hair products (Curl Control Crème, Shampoo, Conditioner).
WORK MUST HAVE: Beats By Dr. Dre ‘noise cancelling’ headphones.
’MONTHLY’ MUST HAVE: Trader Joes Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.
VISION MUST HAVE: DITA eyewear (Elan frames. Purple of course).
MUSIC MUST HAVE: ‘Dancehall Splurt’ with Robbo Ranx on BBC 1xtra

What are you currently listening to?
I listen to a lot of online programming from Europe. Nova Radio out of Paris and BBC 1xtra from the UK are favourites. I used to be a real music freak, but after working in the business I lost the ability to listen as a fan and found myself critiquing everything. But I loves me some Drizzy and Dancehall as both remind me of Toronto.

So what do you do?
I am a motivational speaker, writer and youth mentor. I operate But I Love Me More which now has six contributors compiling non-fiction motivational pieces, profiles, a Q&A / advice section and interviews. Speaking with young women and hearing their testimonials and encouraging ‘lightbulb’ moments is rewarding and healing. ‘I never thought of it that way’ are the best words I could hear. It makes my own dark days worth it so that I can speak from a place of sincere understanding.

(Nova speaking @ Girls Day - Grade 6, 7 & 8)

(Youth Mentoring Connection is the group that Nova and her husband volunteer with. Every year there is a 4 day, soul-bearing, life-changing retreat. This photo is on the final day of the girls weekend in the mountains of Big Bear, California. She is on the far left.)

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
Here is the condensed version. Worked in the music business. Saw a lot. Did a lot. Lived to tell the tale. Lost my passion for music a few years back – it just stopped being fun, even though the position I held at the time was a dream job (on paper). I’ve always been ‘the Miranda’ – the voice of reason, the person who gives advice and council and I’d been doing it for free forever.

I started a blog – for fun – and started to share stories from my own life while focusing on the lesson learned. Word got out, people started sending me their own experiences and seeking advice. Talk radio programs contacted me for a regular feature, websites wanted me to have a column and it started from there.

(Nova was asked by the United Nations Association to speak at the 100th anniversary of International Womens Day)

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
Professionally, walking away from the music business. It was all I’d known, all I’d loved and I had no idea how to transition from music snob to motivational speaker. I had to get to a place where my job title no longer defined my character. Still working on listening to music as a fan versus a critical ear.

In life, battling depression. Age 21-24. Rock bottom and almost no one knew. Constant internal and external sabotage. THEN a series of four traumatic incidences sent me into a tailspin, starting with 9/11. I’m a sensitive person and compounding that suffering with my own was just…too…much. Some ingredients to my healing were: Therapy combined with anti-depressants. Unwavering support. More therapy. Time. Time alone in nature. Finding a spiritual practice.

What did your parents want you to be?
Dad: Marketing Guru/Entrepreneur. Mom: Happy.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
“When you don’t know what you want, know what you don’t want.” – given to me by my dear friend Namugenyi Kiwanuka.

We all have moments of indecision (a Pisces flaw) and instead of whining, ‘I don’t knooooow’, rule out the things you KNOW you DON’T want. When we rule out the negative, the positive becomes clearer. I have used this mantra in every scenario, from picking out an outfit to choosing a date.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
If you follow in my footsteps, it will mean you have to walk through hell and I’d don’t recommend that. If public speaking does appeal to you, prepare to be vulnerable. Sharing the details of the most challenging years of my life is the hardest and most healing part of my job.

In order for your audience to engage you, they need to see you reveal yourself – an experience, a fear, a victory – what makes you relatable? Being vulnerable allows others to do the same and THAT is when the real exchange begins.

(Las Vegas Desert. Landscape photography has become a hobby of hers thanks to the stunning bio-diversity California offers.

(In 2009 Nova trained for 5 months and completed the DisneyLand half marathon (21km) for AIDS Project Los Angeles. One of her proudest moments)

Is it possible for a woman to successfully balance both love and career? Why or why not?
Of course. When she is able to FIRST care for herself the scales start to balance. She is then able to givegivegive to her partner, employees, clients, boss, children, in-laws, friends, family… but she must MAKE that time for herself to fuel up. Otherwise the scales will always be uneven and she will resent those she is spending time with because its time she isn’t spending on herself.

What’s next for you?
Continuing to grow But I Love Me More in the L.A / SoCal area while supporting causes I care about in my hometown Toronto.
The rest…you will see! : )

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
I’m learning that when you look way off into the future, and plan and prepare for those goals and results, you stop being in THIS precious moment. I won’t set any limits as life is long and who knows where 10 years will take me.

With all that said, in my minds eye I do see my future. Huge things. However, I will surrender that part to the Universe and work on winning THIS battle today. In the generalist of terms I see – motherhood, world travels, multiple revenue streams, a solid team, collaborations with my sister, and global activism.

And lastly, in your opinion, What do Women Want??
To be heard. Women want their voice to matter, to be respected, to be appreciated and considered. Women want affection, connection, security with a large dose of spontaneity. Women want to trust and be trusted. Women want good food, great sex and bad T.V. Women want to be supported by other women. Women want it all. Go get it!

p.s. Does anyone even still rock Rocawear? I remember rockin' it like it was hot like ten years ago.... I see that they are trying to revive the line by bringing in some new faces like Melanie Fiona and Trey Songz. Don't know if it will change my mind, but I still got love for Jasmine.

The Vixen Guide To Wearing Weave

1 Women have something to say Links to this post

Alyssa recently did a post about the do's and don'ts of natural haircare and although it was very insightful, I want to take a minute to talk about weaves! because there is nothing like a good weave, don't you agree? I swear finding the best hair in the perfect cut is like sunshine on a rainy day! There are so many brands on the market right now that it can be difficult to choose one that is just right for you, but once you stumble upon it - it's the most amazing feeling. For the past two years, I've been rocking Remi Goddess (the yellow package not the red or white) and I have been so happy that I haven't looked elsewhere. Here is a picture of Shay, Alyssa and I rockin' the latest - They will chime in, in the comment section of the blog about their hair brand favourites aswell.

"Weave can not only enhance your look, but transform you into another woman. The main purpose of wearing extensions is to enhance your hair to its fullest potential, not to cause breakage and harm to your natural hair."

Unfortunately, all weaves are not created equal. Some don’t last long and, without care, they can cause major breakage for your natural hair. VIBE Vixen chatted with Ericka Dotson, Co-founder and Creative Director of Indique Virgin Hair Extensions, to get the 411 on hair extensions!

When choosing hair:

1.Choose a length in hair extensions that you will feel comfortable in.

2.Create your signature style by blending textures with 100% human hair. For example, combining wavy hair with curly gives you an easy wash-and-go style. A relaxed texture combined with straight will give you the perfect blend with lots
of body.

3.Choose textures that work for your lifestyle. Do you work out? Do you like low maintenance hair? Ask yourself these questions when selecting. You can also opt for clip-in extensions for a temporary style.

4.Think about how often you would want to change your style with your extensions. For a natural part, leave some of your natural hair out. For alternating between lots of body and sleek strands, opt for curly or wavy textures.

5.Don’t be afraid of color! Choose a color that compliments your skin tone and one that you can easily maintain.

Hair extension care:

1.Maintenance is key. Treat your extensions as you would your natural hair. However, you should take your extensions down every eight weeks. Every six months, you should also give your hair a break from extensions for at least two to four weeks.

2.Avoid hairline breakage at all costs! Take care of your natural hair. Try to leave out ample hair around the edges to avoid added tension around your hairline. Tight braids applied close to your hairline with tracks sewn on them can easily break or cause further damage, like tractional alopecia.

3.When getting extensions, always use premium hair. Using 100% virgin Indian hair, with cuticles running in one direction, from root to tip, will ensure that you will be able to reuse the hair multiple times.

4.These types of products will weigh the hair down and make your hair extensions stiff so avoid at all costs:
◦Spritz
◦Oil sheens
◦Products containing alcohol
◦Heavy leave-in conditioners
◦Mousse
◦Pomades

5.Shampoo hair in the shower in a downward motion to keep hair from tangling. Air dry or use a diffuser for curly hair, for straight styles use your blow dryer and a vent brush and flat iron until sleek. Make sure your base braids are fully dry to avoid braid mildew.

Relationships: Are Men Who Still Live At Home Wack?

3 Women have something to say Links to this post

There's a myth that men who still live at home with mama are: broke mama's boys who aren't ready to grow up. As soon as we learn that he doesn't have his own place, we (when I say we I mean most) are so quick to slap a label on him and it's onto the next one. Regardless of this fact, I'm sure you agree that there has always been ignorance between both sexes and to tell you the truth I can't keep up with all of these rules and guidelines to dating, however, if in fact you met someone who caught your attention, but he did not meet all the requirements on your 'list' (aka he still lived at home), would you make an exception? or this an absolute deal breaker?

Remember when TLC came out with the anthem, "No Scrubs"

If you don't have a car and you're walking
Oh yes son I'm talking to you
If you live at home wit' your momma
Oh yes son I'm talking to you (baby)
If you have a shorty but you don't show love
Oh yes son I'm talking to you
Wanna get with me with no money
Oh no I don't want no scrub

That was my jam back in the day and I'm sure it was yours too! But we all grow up and times have changed (or maybe in your case - it's still words you live by) and you realize that certain things are more important than others. For instance, a man's job, car, and wallet are less important than his integrity, values, direction and family. Feel me?

So back to the original question: Are men who live at home still wack even if they possess the qualities above?

Let me hear it ladies. I will meet you in the comment section of this post with my opinion.

20s/30s/40s?
20's

What is your zodiac sign?
Leo!!

What is your educational background?
I went to St Mary's Secondary School in Pickering

Where were you born? Raised? Live now?
I was born in Toronto and raised in Pickering and I live between Toronto and Los Angeles currently.

Single or Taken?
Taken

First job ever?
My first "job" ever was a christy cookie commerical when I was 2 yrs old. I was on set for 6 hours but I got to eat cookies the whole time so it didn't feel like work lol.

First “real” job?
I've been an actress my whole life so my first "real job" was probably my first "real" acting role where I played "Teenage Natalie Cole" and I had to cry, I'd never done that before and it took a lot out of me at the time.

Your 5 “must haves” of the moment?
"Watch The Throne" Jay Z/Kanye Album, I can't wait!!! The ipad 2 or 3 whatever I think I just need one. A shopping spree (there's too many new items I need for me to list only 5 lol), grey ant sunnies and 1992 Earrings by Badacious.

What are you currently listening to?
Beyonce, Cee-Lo and Robyn

So what do you do?
I am an entertainer, I sing, I act and sometimes I blog!

(Andrea performing at Intimate & Interactive)

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
My mom got me started in the acting industry as a toddler, I started doing commercials and print ads and eventually moved up to TV and film. At the same time I've always sang and in between my acting gigs I would work on demos and started writing songs around 13 yrs old. I was fortunate enough to book a bunch of movies back to back (Down in the Delta, A Holiday Romance, The Natalie Cole Story, Cadet Kelly) by time I hit high school. And then I landed the character "Hazel" on Degrassi where I spent the next 6 seasons! Around the time when my character was "graduating" I did another series during a Degrassi Hiatus called "Mocassin Flats" where my character was a singer and they used my demos that I soon after released on my first album, "Float Away" through Maple Music/Universal and then I made the move to LA! After 6 months of being in LA I booked the first production of the musical "Dreamgirls" (and it was my first time doing a musical) in Canada and I came back home to do that for 6 months then I returned to LA. While I was there I was working on my music and auditioning like crazy and somewhere in between there one of my best friends Shannon Boodram and I started our website and brand "ThoseGirlsAreWild" then I landed the part of "Robin" in Nickelodeon's first movie musical "Spectacular". Shortly after the movie's release I started working on my last album "54321" with my good friend and writing partner Ty Mckery and the album did really well! I got the chance to promote it in LA, New York, Toronto and the UK. Making the album was a huge release for me because I got to finally write songs about my personal experiences! I had no inhibitions and was free to sing how ever I wanted! After spending the last year promoting the album I recently did a guest spot on the sy-fy series "Warehouse 13" as the character "JoBeth" and I'm currently playing "Peaches the Dynamite" in the musical "Hairspray" in Winnipeg!

(Andrea acting on Cadet Kelly w/ Hilary Duff)

(Drake, Andrea & Sara from Degrassi)

(Andrea w/ Shannon Boodram - Those Girls are Wild)

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
Even though I've been fortunate enough to book acting jobs and release music my career has still been very up and down. I'm still told "no" on a regular basis and sometimes it's difficult to stay motivated in such a fickle industry. The toughest thing I've been faced with is self-confidence, I struggle with this all the time and it's such a huge part of ones success.

What did your parents want you to be?
My mom always wanted me to be doing exactly what I'm doing. She loves entertainment and is truly my number one fan. My dad wanted me to go to school and get a "normal" job, probably anything but this lol.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
"Everything comes in it's own time" Maya Angelou said that to me when I was 12 yrs old. In my industry there is never enough time and you always wish something amazing happened to you yesterday. But I've learnt that everything comes to you when you're ready. I've had a lot of opportunities now that I wished I had when I was younger but I wasn't ready for them at the time. All I worry about now is learning and be prepared as much as possible for when it's my time.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps
I would say, "don't be afraid". There's been many times in my life when I shoulda, coulda, woulda but for what ever reason I was scared and I really shouldn't have been! The older I get the more fearless I become and I always tell young girls or women who want to do what I do to just go for it! Don't let fear hold you back.

Is it possible for a woman to successfully balance both love and career? Why or why not?
Of course it is! We are born multi-taskers! The same way that I can make time for the gym is just how I make time for a date! It takes work but if you want it you can have it.

What’s next for you?
Next I'm working on another album, I don't have a release date yet but I'm excited about it! I've got a lot of ideas that have been bouncing around my head that I need to get out!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
In 5-10yrs I'd like to have started my own family, own a production company and successfully released a movie that I produced! And in between all that have released a few more albums! :)

And lastly, in your opinion, What do Women Want??
Women want to have our cake and eat it too!
