Exhibits: Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival

1 Women have something to say Links to this post

A picture is worth 1000 words and Scotiabank's Contact Photography Festival has led me to explore that expression further. I must say the exhibits I got to check out were pretty cool and they've inspired me to pick up my camera and start snapping photos everywhere I go. I won't bore you with 1000 words, I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves....

CHRISETTE MICHELE: It's Not Serious, It's Just Hair!

0 Women have something to say Links to this post
While I was browsing Vibe.com I came across a candid interview featuring Chrisette Michele about her decision to cut off all her hair. Her confidence is inspiring and I'm sure you will all agree with me when I say that she looks great with a shaved head. It seems as if many celebrities are making the bold decision to bare it all, just recently Janet Jackson was spotted with a shorter do aswell. Then we have some who are partial to the movement such as Cassie, Mel. B, Will and Jada Smith's daughter Willow etc.

The article "It's Not That Serious, It's Just Hair" dives into Chrisette's thoughts about why she chose to let it all go:

The turning point for me to shave my head was when I was out on tour. I had some pieces glued into my head because I didn’t want to dye my own hair, and the glued on piece would not come out of my head so I said I’m shaving my head because this is ridiculous. This does not make me Black. This does not make me a great singer; this makes me have a piece of hair stuck to my head and I was like, "I’m done, I can’t do this anymore." So I decided I wanted to find beauty in a different way without doing something that was so damaging to something that was precious to me, which is my hair. I could have gotten it out but I said, "No, I’m just gonna shave it off."

Her advice to all women is to keep it simple! and further explains that she stays humble by remembering that her hair does not make her black, a prettier woman or a great singer.

I say... This article hit me hard as I know it may strike a cord with some of you. I make a committment to do my hair often and it does make me feel good when I leave the salon- but then I think, am I hiding behind my hair? I have to admit I wouldn't have the courage to shave it all off like Chrisette- but I do admire her reasons behind what she did!

Do you think some women hide behind their hair? and What do you think of this trend of shaving it all off and rocking a shorter do?

I'm anxious to hear your thoughts...

I couldn't agree more.

What do you think of her rendition of the song? I wonder what Ms. Etta James would think???

Well done B-Rocka! But no one can do it quite like Etta...

Zodiac: Pisces (My favorite sign - obvi)

I say: "Money Insecurity is the root of all evil"

A friend and I had a discussion this weekend and the quote "Money is the root of all evil" came up in conversation.  We were debating back and forth and came to the realization that that quote isn't entirely true. We think that most terrible things that are said and done, stem in some way, shape or form from insecurity and it held true for every example that we came up with.  Do you agree?

I got a comment saying that this post wasn't positive, but I have to disagree.  Maybe I wasn't clear enough when I initially posted, but the purpose of posting this was to reinforce the importance of believing in yourself and being secure with you are and where you are going. Because if you aren't it can cause you to do things that you aren't proud of.  (i.e. The girl that hates her BF's ex-girlfriend for no reason, or the athlete that despises their opponent, or the coworker that smiles in your face but then reports you to The Boss.  If those people were secure in themselves, their lives, their jobs, their relationships, they wouldn't have time or energy to do such things).

I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Shannae :)

Follow your heart.
Stay inspired.
Stop being a victim.
Do things you're good at.
Love your work.
Get a new perspective.
Have a sense of wonder.
Don't isolate.
Find people you love.
Set goals.
Finish what you started.
Help others.
Do a one day news fast.
Dance.
Pamper yourself.
Face your fears.
Go to a museum.
Any decision is better than no decision.
Exercise.

Listen to music.
Get in touch with nature.
Lighten up.
Have a moral compass.
Get a good night's sleep.
Read books.
Buy yourself flowers.
Reach out.
Set up a realistic schedule.
Don't compare yourself to others.
Live in the moment.
Don't beat up yourself.
Accept that life has its ups and downs.
Every night reflect on the good things about your day.
Be open to new ideas.
Believe in yourself.
Be kind.
Let people know how special they are.
Be honest with yourself.
Don't focus on negative thoughts.
Focus on creating what you desire.
Make time just to have fun.
Say thank you to the people who teach you, support your, encourage you and get you a cup of coffee.
Don't forget money doesn't buy you happiness.

Drew Barrymore's Words...

0 Women have something to say Links to this post

Name: Drew Barrymore

Age: 35

Zodiac: Pisces (shes three days after meeee!)

Drew said:  "I want people to love me, but it's not going to hurt me if they don't."

I say: I really wish that I was the same.  While, I don't care for everyone to love me (obvi), it really does hurt sometimes when you know someone doesn't like you and they don't really have a good reason.  I am working on "not caring" about those situations, but I'm not a robot and it does hurt!

Can anyone relate?

PS - I'm sure I've said it a gillion times on this blog but Drew Barrymore has been such a huge inspiration to me... Her story and beautiful evolution make me love her to bits and pieces and I truly hope to meet her one day!

BOOKS: WWW Recommends The Tipping Point By: Malcolm Gladwell

0 Women have something to say Links to this post

“How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference” is the biggest lesson that this fascinating book called The Tipping Point has to offer. The introduction alone caught my attention as Gladwell’s words slowly started to make sense. I delved deeper into his thoughts and soon became addicted to the way he taught me how to change the way I transpire my ideas.

THE TIPPING POINT is another term for that magical moment when change occurs- when a simple idea explodes into a social epidemic. For example, when an unknown author suddenly becomes a national best seller through word of mouth, or when a particular article of clothing comes back into style after 10 years of collecting dust on store shelves.

It's amazing how this book is able to dissect the reasons why a "turning point" happends and when you navigate your way through the page turning case studies, you will see exactly what I mean. I don’t have to tell you how intelligent Gladwell’s writing is because his work speaks for itself , but I do want to express to you that I highly recommend this book!

HAPPY READING LADIES!

Beauty: Secret Chemicals in Fragrances Can Kill You?

0 Women have something to say Links to this post
According to laboratory tests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group, studies have shown that there are 38 secret chemicals which are not listed on 17 major fragrances that are connected with serious health problems.

In the article Secret Chemicals in Fragrances Could Kill You, I learned that American Eagle Seventy Seven, Britney Spears Curious and Chanel Coco are some of the worst offenders- not listing many chemicals on their label.

"Ten sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches, and contact dermatitis. Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio contained 19 different sensitizing chemicals, more than any other product in the study.

Four hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption, and cancer. Halle by Halle Berry, Quicksilver and Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow each contained seven different chemicals with the potential to disrupt the hormone system."

This goes to prove that nothing is ever what it seems. We all may love the sexy smell of all of our favourite brands, but most of us are poorly educated on the effects of these products. This is the kind of information that is cut out of advertisements and commercials- so before you purchase your next beauty product, do a little research!

(My personal fav!) This Hat can be worn with everything from destroyed denim & a tank to a ruffled bikini. It is a summer accessory that a true fashionista must have ;-D
