Relationships: Marry Mr. Good Enough??

Lori Gottlieb is the author of a new book called Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough. Time Magazine featured her in a Q&A session to hear to her thoughts about when women should stop waiting for Mr. Right.
You can read the article HERE
It`s an interesting piece. I found her points realistic and whitty. One of my favourite answers is when she talks about how much women overestimate their desirability; in other words, thinking their the ish when realistically they may have nothing to offer a good man even if Mr. Right were to come into their lives.
Gottlieb says, "I talked to a lot of experts about this sort of sense of entitlement that women of our generation grew up with. I'm all for girl power and all of that, but I think that a lot of us are "yes women" to each other. We say, "You should hold out for the better guy. Oh yes, absolutely, you deserve the best." I think we do ourselves a disservice where we kind of inflate each other's egos to the point of unreality."

What is your defintion of Mr. Right and do you see yourself waiting untill he comes along even if it takes several months, maybe even several years?
Or are you willing to settle for a man who may not have all the qualities you're looking for but comes close?

POETRY: How Do You Love A Black Woman?

Pauleanna Authored this beautiful poem about Loving a Black Woman... ;D
How Do You Love a Black Woman?
I don’t need a man
To make me feel like a woman
But I do need a man who understands what womanhood is
And the love binding struggle that we as black woman experience
When dealing with men who are disconnected from their roots
And have replaced Creativity, Originality, and Sensuality with a dull shine.
How Do You Love a Black Woman?
Love us with a genuine heart
See the beauty and talent in all areas of our lives
And appreciate the knowledge within our minds
Take that knowledge
And feed it to those who are thirsty for wisdom
Take that wisdom
And feed it to those who are capable of creating a new blue print for society
With their dreams & aspirations
Allow this circle to continue…
Love us with an admiration for our strength
And recognize the significance of our existence
Admit your need for us
And express to us how much you hurt without your backbone
And when we fall
Catch us
Catch us with 2 arms
Because we recognize your strength too!
Ask questions & seek answers from us
Climb into our ears and listen to the things we say
And appreciate the strength in our opinions
Even if it is about anything and everything
How Do You Love a Black Woman?
By finding the courage to stop playing games that you should have left behind years ago
By separating yourselves from other men
In order to become your own man
And allowing yourselves to discover your own definition of manhood and what it really means
Connect yourselves to your present day realities and re-evaluate how you feel about
Respect. Love. Loyalty.
Love us with respect for our bodies
Starting from the inside out
Adore the little things that make us who we are
Such as our
Strong cheek bones, variations of our chocolate tones, textured hair, and thick lips
We don’t expect you to read our minds
But once inside, pay attention to our sensitive areas
And acknowledge intimate moments as another form of communication
A combination not to be interrupted
Hold us tight
With 2 arms
And indulge yourselves in the sweetness that we have to offer you
Satisfy your craving with our never-ending love
And cherish the thought of two individuals
Coming together to become one with each other
One mind
And one soul
Yours Truly,
Your Black Woman

We are winding down to the end of Black History Month and this is a time where most of us can appreciate the awe-inspiring accomplishments of African-Americans around the world. I thought this poem that I created was appropriate and I wanted to share my thoughts about How to Love a Black Woman, but not only black women, all women who share different nationalities. I hope you enjoy reading this piece as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Hi ladies! I'm here again with a hair style tip on how to create those glamorous beach waves we've all seen Tyra Banks, Jessica Simpson, Taylor Swift (the one who made it popular) and my personal favorite Jennifer Love-Hewitt rock like it's no bodies business!
In this video I do a heat vs no heat comparison. You'll see that heat styling allows you to control the look your going for; if you want bigger waves you simply use bigger sections. Heat styling is also best for immediate results. Now because I'm on a healthy hair journey I'd choose the no heat style option any day! It's quick, simple and easy to apply... You just have to commit to the hair style you'll be rocking the next day.
Anywho enough chatter... Enjoy the vid ;)
Here are some pictures of previous times I've styled my hair in beach waves:

I discovered the beautifully written memoir EAT. PRAY LOVE. By Elizabeth Gilbert several months ago and I couldn't put this book down.
Elizabeth had everything that a woman is suppose to want - A loving husband, country home, and a successful career but although she lived what seemed like a perfect life, she couldn't figure out why she still felt so unfullfilled. This New York Times Best Seller is about her a journey to three different countries in order to find divine peace. I read about her pursuit of pleasure in Italy, her pursuit of devotion in India and her pursuit of balance in Indonesia.
Below is one of my favourite passages from the book. I love the emotion and honesty in her words:
"I got started early in life with the pursuit of sexual and romantic pleasure. I barely had an adolescence before I had my first boyfriend, and I have consistenly had a boy or a man (sometimes both) in my life since I was fifteen years old.
..Each overlapping the next, with never so much as a week's breather in between. And I can't help but think that's been something of a liability on my path to maturity."
..Each overlapping the next, with never so much as a week's breather in between. And I can't help but think that's been something of a liability on my path to maturity."
Her story is beautiful. I hope you enjoy this novel as much as I did.
HAPPY READING LADIES!

Love & Money: How Much Do You Think A Wedding Really Costs?

How many of you have dreamed about your wedding since you were a little girl? Starting with the princess ball gown with the 6ft train...
It's a fantasy that plays in our minds until that day comes, however, the one thing that many women forget about is What a Wedding Really Costs! In this article I found that the recession has hit some but not all when it comes to planning a wedding. There are so many invisible costs which makes it so easy to spend more than you have budgeted for.
"The true cost of these things is more than most people realize. If they did the math, they'd probably get married in flip-flops.
Your $18,000 wedding? It may really end up costing you between $90,000 and $200,000. That $2,000 dress? Think: $10,000 to $22,000. The $10,000 food bill for your guests? Try $50,000 to $110,000."
"The true cost of these things is more than most people realize. If they did the math, they'd probably get married in flip-flops.

The article goes on to explain that you have to consider the opportunity cost lost in deciding to put money towards a $2000 dress versus a $2000 401/K or RRSP. They also talk about the long term costs associated with putting your wedding on credit... And if you continue reading, you'll discover a few suggested tips to help you save when planning for that special day.
Do you think you could stay within a budget when planning your own wedding? or is your wedding a day when money is no object?
Shannae sez: "To me, its more about commemorating that special day with my boo... I am the type of person that would rather run off to somewhere beautiful and hot, wear a white sundress with a flower in my hair and exchange vows on the beach during the sunset. Then I would fly back and throw a huge party with my loved ones to celebrate our new union! My choice wouldn't even be financial, I just feel like these big weddings become more about the "show" and the true essence is lost.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I know that we usually do female focused posts, but I just had to share this one....
Have you tuned into MTV lately? There's a show that has my full attention and I want to share it with you. It's called The Buried Life.
This show follows 4 young men who are traveling the world and completing an epic list of 100 things they would like to accomplish before they die.
Take a look at this trailer below:
I love the concept and the guts they have to do this! It reminds me how precious life is.
So ladies, I'm going to pose this question to you!
What is one thing you want to do before you die? and are you working towards accomplishing it?
I'll be sharing my thoughts in the comment section of this post too!

The Shows... The Shows... The Shows...
As you know, its New York Fashion Week and "The Shows" are here... With the bevy of beautiful designers out there, its so tough sometimes to choose which shows to look out for.
If you regularly read this blog already know who my faves are... I'll be showcasing the looks from my favorite designers today... the first of which is Herve Leger by Max Azria...
This year they traded in colour for, (can you believe it?), more structure! What I love most about Herve Leger is their strong and beautiful colour choices paired with their bold bandaged structure, so it was sad to see less colour on the runway... but what I did love is their growth into the body suit arena! Talk about cat woman chic! Read more to see my favorite looks....

This first video is a deep conditioning treatment that I do once a week to restore moisture to my hair, this restores elasticity and helps to curb shedding. I use organic coconut oil and apply it from root to tip and then sit under a hooded dryer for 30 mins or I just wear a processing cap for a few hours. The coconut oil seeps into your system through your hair follicles so be sure to read up on advantages and disadvantages of coconut oil BEFORE you use it (some ppl claim it to be a miracle cure all but there are side effects) Check the video description for more info.
This second video is just me styling my hair... I'm sure everyone knows how to blow dry and flat iron their own hair... but not all of us do (you'd be surprised). I do not use this method on my hair often (only twice a month tops) because I do not want to dry my hair out and direct heat has extreme drying and damaging effects. Again read the video description for more info.
Because these are very basic/ straight forward procedures I decided I wouldn't speak on the video. If you have questions don't be afraid to ask "I'll be around" (LMAO!!)... I hope you enjoyed my music selections and the videos too... Visit my YouTube channel here and subscribe for future updates and tutorials.
Talk to you soon!
Love,
Afrykah

On another note, I was surprised that Alicia Keys and Beyonce were not there! It would have been nice for Lauryn to make an appearance. Regardless, it was well well done!

My Words...

"You shouldn't be proud to be anyone but YOURSELF. Embrace that and so will everyone else."
Today is my big ME celebration!!
So in addition to my words above, below is a collection of beautiful words of inspiration that I hope inspire you to start LIVING!
Treasure every moment that you have.... and remember that time waits for no one ...
So stop waiting until you finish school ... until you go back to school ... until you lose ten pounds ... until you gain ten pounds ... until you have kids ... until your kids leave the house ... until you start work ... until you retire ... until you get married ... until you get divorced ... until Friday night ... until Sunday morning ... until you get a new car or home ... until your car or home is paid off ... until spring, until summer ... until fall ... until winter ... until you are off welfare ... until the first or fifteenth ... until your song comes on ... until you've had a drink ... until you've sobered up ... until you die ... until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy ...
Happiness is a journey ... not a destination!!
"Work like you don't need money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
And dance like no one's watching."

We're all familiar with the work of English design legend Lee "Alexander" McQueen, who was notoriously known for his unconventional concept of fashion. As the head designer at Givenchy for 5 years then founding his own lables (Alexander McQueen and McQ) he had an immense celebrity following including Madonna, Janet Jackson, RiRi and Lady Gaga. McQueen was found dead at home yesterday morning just days before London Fashion Week. It it has been reported that this incident could be a possible suicide. This is an unfortunate and sad event, and he'll be deeply missed by the fashion world.
