Check out this article called Deodarants, Antiperspirants, Parabens & Breast Cancer. It's a very informative read about the scientific study of how chemicals in deodarants can possibly cause breast cancer.
I have heard this rumor before, but never believed it could be true until I read up on it (if you search the internet you will find all sorts of studies on this topic).
"Breast cancer has been on the rise for over half a century. Only 5-10% of breast cancer is genetic, leaving up to 90% from the environment and lifestyle. [1] Studies indicate that deodorants / antiperspirants play a major role in the increase of breast cancer cases."
There's a substance called Parabens found in cosmetic products that are also found in breast tumor tissue and researchers are questioning the harmful affects that women may be exposed to while absorbing it through the skin continually.
The article continues:
"When you apply deodorant / antiperspirant, it stays on your skin throughout the day. Any harmful substance that can be absorbed through the skin, has ample time to get absorbed. Most of us apply deodorants / antiperspirants at least once per day. As a result, many of us are exposed to parabens continually, 24/7, every day.
Parabens ingested through food have a limited effect on the human body partly due to the ingestion system. However, parabens absorbed through the skin are able to stay intact and accumulate in the body."
What are your thoughts on this article?
Will you be checking the label of your cosmetic products from now on?

The truth of the matter is, you know, with the exception of my mother, most people who know me know I don’t look great in makeup. When I was younger I was into it. You know, people have strong connotations of what women on television should say and what they should wear and how they should look. And I’m just not into it. The Bravo shot of me on the couch? It looks like I had sex with Heather Locklear and five margaritas.”
I say: She is one of the few people, where I agree... MAKEUP doesn't work for you girl... Au Natural, ALL THE WAY... (Mind you, the pic above doesn't look so bad)... But more importantly... OMG! Kelly has her own show!!

I was reading the Toronto Star and came across an amazing article that sparked quite a few thoughts, called Meet Toronto Girls with New York City Dreams. It's about Toronto women who anxiously fleet to New York in order to gain greater wealth, be exposed to better job opportunities, and follow their dreams, whether that means to become an established business woman, writer, dancer, etc.
This piece personally struck a cord with me, because I am a writer. If you're familiar with my work then you may know that I am currently writing a novel and going through the process of meeting with agents. Writing is a love hate relationship. It can take a day or a lifetime to be well respected. In my world, New York is the land of opportunity for young writers and their creative visions, and after reading this article, I wonder if I should book a ticket right now and take a huge chance, risking everything! Isn't that what life's about?
..Or so it seems. It's so interesting to read about the stories in this article. The women who had the courage leave Toronto and confidently move forward with their lives in NYC. It definitely made me think twice about if Toronto is right for me.
Here's a snippet from the article:
"It's a self-fulfilling prophesy: the best and the brightest are drawn to New York because they want to meet the best and the brightest.
"If you want to be a poet, you're going to be with best poets in the world; if you want to be in the underground music scene, you're going be in the best underground music scene in the world; if you want to be with the wealthiest people in the world, you're going to be here," says Jessica Lubell, a Torontonian with dual citizenship, who works for a public relations company. "It's got everything and the best of everything. That's what makes it stand apart from any other city in the world."
You now know about me, but what are some of your dreams and aspirations?!
Would you pick up and relocate your life, if you knew that there were greater opportunities in another city, or country?
I hope you ladies enjoy this article as much as I did.

I have bypassed many tracks by this young lady just because I couldn't over her 'bubble gum, lollipop' type image. I gave her a chance and I have to say I'm impressed! I'm loving her voice and the lyrics of this song are very clever! I wonder if she is also a song writer??? Regardless, this song works for me. The style in this song really reminds me of someone but, I can't quite put my finger on it...

This month’s book is called Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich (Louis P. Frankel, PhD, Self-Help, 2005). The insightful content gives insight to women young and old on the only two ways to free yourself from economic stress: Financial Planning and Financial Thinking! The advice in this self help book will push you towards striving to financial freedom. Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich is a great way to start the New Year off on a good foot and I personally advise that you pick up this book and educate yourself about your financial status if you want to be a step ahead.
Some common mistakes:
1) Not creating a financial goal – Living life blindly
2) Spending as an emotional crutch – A short term fix to a long-term problem
3) Working at a salary less than you deserve – Not re-evaluating your position and being assertive!
This is something I think about all the time. One thing I work hard towards is maintaining financial stability. The economic situation is way too fragile and in my personal opinion, no one is safe, so why take a chance?
From this book, I've learned how to put my visa on ice and pay myself first!
How do you handle your money? Do you play it smart? or spend your heart out and think about the consequences later?!
Either way, I hope you all will benefit from this knowledge aswell.
HAPPY READING LADIES!

Shannae recently took a much needed vacay to have fun, reflect, relax and get in some retail therapy!! But I recently learned about a few ways to take a vacation without paying a cent!
Take a look at this article I came across in Redbook Magazine. It outlines three simple things that you can do on a daily basis to maintain your mental wellness. I researched this topic further and was educated about how essential it is for individuals to take time out for themselves because when you make yourself a priority you will discover the key component to creating the life you really want!
Here are a few more ways to stay balanced:
- Maintaining a proper diet
- Laughing
- Meditating
- Reading
Restoring your emotional well-being is so important! No matter how busy you are, your body and mind need a break!
Do you feel that you take on too much sometimes? How do you cope with stress?
I'd love to hear your thoughts..

Shannae says: I am a big #FAIL when it comes to the diet... But I laugh a lot (and it works!), and I should read and meditate a lot more!! What about you??

I have to be honest with you, I think that her first surgery after 2006 was an upgrade(the boobs, the nose)... However, her most recent cosmetic surgery procedures (More boobs?? lol and the eyebrow lift and whatever else) are a bit too much.
Overall, I still think that she looks better than she did originally, but this second set of procedures looks too obvious. Especially the breast! But to each his own, I guess!
First Question: Do you think that Heidi looks better or worse after her surgeries?
Second Question: I'm not against cosmetic surgery, are you??
UPDATE: HERE'S THE VIDEO OF HER EXPLAINING HER "PROCEDURES"

Relationships: More Men Marrying Wealthier Women

So last month we learned that if you are a successful black woman, your chances of getting married are slim to none... and now we learn that the men that are marrying are "marrying up" so to speak?
According to this New York Times article, men aged 30-44 are increasingly likely to marry women with more education and higher income than them.
Me? I've always dreamed that my husband is going to be more successful and financially capable than me. I've only dated someone who isn't once, and to be honest, I don't know if I'd ever do it again.Ladies, what do you think of this?
PS - Shout outs to Beagy Zielinski for being featured in the New York Times! Remember her Woman With a Story post last year?

Many women use different forms of birth control methods. There's the contraceptive sponge, the cervical sheild, the patch, vaginal ring etc., but the most popular by far is the birth control pill. It's a simple way to prevent pregnancy, 99% effective and has normal side effects such as nausea, bloating and breast tenderness... or so we thought?!
Have your ever looked up the side effects of the specific brand of pill that you're using? or do you just take the doctors word that everything will be okay? It's definately something to think about because reports are showing drastic side effects in the brand Yaz and also in a hormonal injection birth control called Depo-Provera.
I read an article called Birth Control Conundrum and it was about the disturbing side effects that these two brands cause and the uproar that approxiamately 25,000 women in the states are protesting about.
"In a new study, 45% of women who received the depot medroxyprogesterone acetate shot, or Depo-Provera, lost 5% or more of the bone density in their hips or lower spine."
After reading this article, how do you feel about using the pill?
Ladies, lets hear your thoughts!
Oh and check out this video while you're at it...

How many times have you heard that having curves was a bad thing?
Especially around this time of year many women are crash dieting because its #1 on their New Years Resloutions list, but little do they know that they may be burning pounds that could make them healthier!
Shannae sent me this article on how important it is to carry some fat on your body and as I continued to read on I found out some pretty interesting reasons. In fact, the title of this informative piece is called ' Having a big bum, hips and thighs is healthy '
The article continued..
"Hip fat mops up harmful fatty acids and contains an anti-inflammatory agent that stops arteries clogging, they say. "
Its pretty interesting.
Let us know your thoughts! Are you the type of women who embraces her curves? or are you desperately trying to get rid of them?

PS - Thanks to Shannae's friend Dwayne for the article inspiration!

Oprah's Words...

Name: Oprah Winfrey
Age: 55
Zodiac: Aquarius
Oprah said: “So go ahead. Fall down. The world looks different from the ground.”
I say: Failure. One of my biggest fears... Sometimes I wonder, is Oprah saying what she has said after truly having the experience of falling flat on her face??? Everyone has their little set backs and what not, but I am scared to truly fail at something... Well when and if it happens, I hope that I learn from it and it makes me a better person.

You may be surprised at what's trending for 2010. Be prepared to see beautiful woman streaming down the runway with seemingly no makeup on. What you are going to see is beautiful skin, soft contoured eyes, and lightly blushed cheeks. Skin, skin, skin! There is a certain elegance and femininity that exudes when a woman looks beautiful in bare makeup. Simplicity is always handsome.

These looks can easily be carried from day to night. Your glowing skin matches your jeans and pumps, as well as it matches your studded black mini. The greatest part of this is that it doesn't require much touching up.
Obtaining a natural look can be difficult. For we all don't have flawless skin!
Im excited that this trend happens to be my first post on WWW. It gives me a chance to advocate on how important I believe minting a good skin regime is. Naturally the first step to getting this look would be prepping our skin as best we can. Cleanse. Exfoliate. Moisturize. Prime. These are the 4 steps prior to your application that will make your look fantastic, and keep it fantastic for most of the day.
Exfoliating the skin for this look is the step that may be overlooked, but if you find your foundation isn't sitting naturally on your skin It's probably because your skin is sitting on your skin! Get that dead skin outta here! I have a new favourite exfoliating system called the Clarisonic brush. Its phenomenal and is worth the 200 dollars it goes for. Instead of continually purchasing exfoliates that over dry my skin and spending hundreds of dollars on products that just weren't working, I invested in this little guy. It uses soft bristles to deep clean your skin, and in turn deters aging! My skin was more subtle after the first use. I couldn't wait to wash my face at the end of the day !
After exfoliation, moisturize your skin to keep it looking fresh, and be sure to prime after you moisturize.
Now on to the make up.
Remember we are trying to enhance our beauty without covering it all up. Foundation is so key, and to obtain a wholly natural feel a proper colour is essential. I personally have had troubles finding a perfect match, and have explored tons of brands. I find ha Makeup Forever has a wide variety of colours complementing woman of all ethnicities. Their HD liquid foundation is the a great consistency which can bring you from light to medium coverage. The next step is to highlight. Highlight protruding parts of the face where we a natural highlight already exists. ( i.e., ocular bone, nose, chin, forehead, cheek bones.) Use a soft highlighter, one of my favourites is the NARS multiple stick. It comes in a variety of colours, and you will find a highlighter suitable for you skin tone. Last step in the complexion process is bronzer. Use a bronzer with less sheen to render a natural glow. Use your bronzer where the sun naturally hits your face. Seal the deal with the Makeup Forever HD Powder for amazing results and a long wearing look.
How do we get those lovely sot bedroom eyes. Use neutral colours, like bronze, peach copper, soft pink. If you use black, soften out the lines with a smudge brush to create a more sultry eye. Stila eyeshadows have amazing pigment and come in a white range of colours.

1. NARS Multiple Stick
2. Makeup Forerver HD Makeup and Powder
3. Stilla Eyeshadows
4. Clarisonic Brush System
Shannae says: Thanks Melanie!! Amazing Job!

Music: Kesha - "Your Love is My Drug"

What do you think of Kesha? She's cool... Not sure if she has lasting star power... I'm kinda feeling this song off of her Album "Animal", but I feel like it sounds just like "Tik Tok"
What do you think??

Inspiration Post: The Rules for being Human

Someone near and dear to me shared these words with me.
They touched me, so I thought I'd share with you...
The Rules for being Human
When you were born, you didn't come with an owner's manual; these guidelines make life work better.
1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it's the only thing you are sure to keep for the rest of your life.
2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called "Life on Planet Earth". Every person or incident is the Universal Teacher.
3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of experimentation. "Failures" are as much a part of the process as "success."
4. A lesson is repeated until learned. It is presented to you in various forms until you learn it -- then you can go on to the next lesson.
5. If you don't learn easy lessons, they get harder. External problems are a precise reflection of your internal state. When you clear inner obstructions, your outside world changes. Pain is how the universe gets your attention.
6. You will know you've learned a lesson when your actions change. Wisdom is practice. A little of something is better than a lot of nothing.
7. "There" is no better than "here". When your "there" becomes a "here" you will simply obtain another "there" that again looks better than "here."
8. Others are only mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another unless it reflects something you love or hate in yourself.
9. Your life is up to you. Life provides the canvas; you do the painting. Take charge of your life -- or someone else will.
10. You always get what you want. Your subconscious rightfully determines what energies, experiences, and people you attract -- therefore, the only foolproof way to know what you want is to see what you have. There are no victims, only students.
11. There is no right or wrong, but there are consequences. Moralizing doesn't help. Judgments only hold the patterns in place. Just do your best.
12. Your answers lie inside you. Children need guidance from others; as we mature, we trust our hearts, where the Laws of Spirit are written. You know more than you have heard or read or been told. All you need to do is to look, listen, and trust.
13. You will forget all this.
14. You can remember any time you wish.
I hope you guys enjoyed these rules as much as I have!
