What is your take on fur?? I don't know all of the details but I do know that some really BAD things happen in the pursuit of fur (i.e. electricution, drowning etc.)... In fact, one day, I was chilling, minding my own business while walking down Bloor Street and out pops PETA protesters picketing outside of the new Burberry store with huge posters of the most unimaginable images of animals that had been killed for fur...
Now that Hercules is part of the WWW fam, I have been thinking a lot about my position on fur and the unethical treatment of animals. I've never ever gone out and purchased a fur coat or anything like that, but I do own a bunch of items that have fur on them and it has me thinking. How unethical is it for one to wear fur? Are ALL animals treated badly in order to get their fur? Is there one type of fur that is better than another (i.e rabbit or raccoon fur versus mink or chinchilla)... I haven't decided whether I will go one way or another, but I really want to open up the discussion....
Why do you or DON'T you wear fur?

10 Women have something to say:
I have bits of pieces of fur on various items of clothing but no full-on fur items. I get that fur is bad but it would be hypocritical for me to be anti-fur. I eat meat... and not even the free range, organic stuff. Those animals aren't treated well either. I also wear leather and don't plan on giving that up any time soon. Someone once told me that leather comes from animals that are used for food so it's making use of the full animal... but if the animals are being treated poorly it's kind of a wash.
If a human being eats animals (fish, chicken, pork) and then lambastes others for wearing fur, I find that to be problematic.
I wouldn't say I'm anti-fur either. I do love animals. I stopped eating beef partly because I saw a video on how the cows are treated. It's really inhumane and seems unnecessarily violent. I still eat chicken and even those are treated awfully. So I guess I land somewhere in the middle.
In regards to fur though, I have no desire to purchase a real fur coat or vest. Seems like unnecessary cruelty to me, esp. when you can get a faux fur coat or vest that looks just as cute! Same thing with diamonds (but that's a whole other topic!).
I don't support PETA scare tactics though. One time I was wearing a winter coat with real fur around the hood and PETA members verbally attacked me on the street. I did go home and check the tag to learn it was real animal fur but I wish they'd find better ways to educate people.
(P.S- I like how these deeper topics are occasionally thrown into the mix!)
ever since i learned about this a very long time ago, i decided not to wear fur or anything that has fur in it...these animals get treated a lot more poorly than the others...
peta is very logical in thought, they know that their mission is a mission and half....so they've implemented a program called CAK (Controlled Atmoshpere Killing). this program forces factories (since there are no laws protecting animals yet) to use this form of killing. its a less painful way of killing the animal. the animal dies quicker and is not tortured.
if your that type of consumer that likes to know what they are buying and researches the back of even a cereal box...look out for products that when dealing with animals use this type of method(CAK).
